The United States Flag Code states:
"(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
But what does "no longer a fitting emblem for display mean"?
This is obviously open to interpretation. But like a nice shirt or sweater, we generally know when our clothing is no longer suitable to be worn to church or a dinner party. It's similar to your flag–you should want it to look its best out of respect for what it represents.
